Pz.IV ausf D sd.kfz. 161
History
Was built from October 1939 till May 1940, and is one of most beautiful Pz-4 versions, with a bent front plate, and very complicated form turret. Only 228 were built in total; it has a 360 mm narrow track, with 75mm wheels, its own early 2 sectional sprockets, and its own absolutely spectacular complicated turret. Other versions of tanks had different turrets; BC is thinner, and with a different system turret mask, E is thicker and with a different rear wall and cupola, including all small pieces as well.
Project
We have restored the pz.4 D turret to its original working condition, except for the main gun, and electrical system. The turret has markings: the 3 rings Krupp’s logo, and the number 80536 on every main piece (gun mask, walls, roof, cupola, side hatches)
We also delivered new made radiators for this tank.
The pz4 D is the rarest German tank; not in the meaning of a low quantity of production, but rather in meaning its existence in early Wehrmacht tanks.
The only D's which are present in museum collections are:
D- in Bovington, rebuilt in 1943-44 for a conversion with a long-barreled gun.
D- in Fort LEE, also rebuilt as the long-barreled version with new wheels, tracks, etc. in 1943-44.
The only one still in existence is in the Australian Armor and Artillery Museum, and which has been restored to its original 1940 condition, with our involevement and expertise.
