Sd.Kfz.250/5 Restoration stage 1 (beginning)

Sd.Kfz. 250/5 left in Austria, restored to driving condition, and even used to drive couple of meter even on streets of Vienna.

Vehicle was found in 1970’s in Graz, it  went to hands of historical vehicle enthusiasts, and got it restored according to their needs, Restoration technical level was just to make it driving, but without deep historical research while in that time it was not a mainstream as well most of serious books on sd.kfz 250 were published much much later.

After getting vehicle in our hands in early 2000’s we wanted restoration level according to rarity and historical value of the vehicle – with complete equipment and correct driving capabilities. That means – long and very hard path of  100% dismantle and inspect every part possible replace, and repair everything needed and complete according to manuals with tons of different bits and pieces which need to be in command radio vehicle.

T-26 tank M1937 restoration step 2

Restoration of T-26 tank cylidrical turret, straight body, model of 1937 year.

Step 2.

Most of parts found in battlefields, all world war two relic and not just rusty, dirty while stored 70 years in worst condition, they saw a real war, means before being burried they were under shots, flame and blows, everything is cracked or bent, then russted.

Every and each part and detail needs attention, holes in suspension are not in lines, track don’t move, track links difficult to dismantle, armor is mostly bent and need straighten and much welding

Wheels and their parts being repaired, return rollers are made of several pieces which is much easier to repair, then recast new one

T-26 suspension of a tank leaf spring system, has very many visible detail, vickers suspension need much attention to every small component,

Front armor plate of T-26 was twisted and bent after very powerful blow, photo shows how many directons it needed to be straightened back.

mudguards, with their mounts made bit simplified from original

Hull of T-26 tank mostly complete waiting for suspension carriages with leaf springs, sandblasted and mantled tracks and turret

T-26 tank turret cylindrical “classical” form, most common to see on wartime photos, with 45 mm main gun, no roof antenna.

T-26 tank back engine deck with its many hatches open for oilcooler, and maintain engine, T-26 had Air-cooled engine and radiator only for oil, no water

T-26 tank M1937 restoration step 1

Restoration of T-26 tank cylidrical turret, straight body, model of 1937 year.

According to production reports there was 11 218 pieces of T-26 produced, but there was many differences upon production period from begining to the end, starting from riveted hull, changing double turret to one, straight upperstructure to angled armor called “cone-form”, and cone-form turret to the end of production.

this specimen came blown up from Stalingrad area with most pieces from one tank, rest needed was aqured all over ex USSR to complete tank to its original shape.

T-26 tank right wall of upperstructure, visor slit of driver still visible, T-26 was a right hand driven tank, as its predecessor is Vickers 6 ton British tank.

Turret roof of T-26 tank back, on this picture we can see two of them one above other, the roof which is under is from more early tank with antenna outline.

Suspension carriages, T-26 tanks has leaf spring supension with wheels of 2 main types, all gum wheel as visible on photo 3 on right side was early type wheel, and another wheels with less gum and bolts are late type wheels, closer to war even most early tanks had new-model wheels during repais and tuning.

T-26 tank main sprocket wheel covers, hub covers, on the right original paint still well visible, after re-coloring we got color on the left.

whole tank is painted with this color, very same to red army helmets of early ww2 period

Armored head lamp hatch for soviet tank, T-26 and also giant T-35 tank had same one(2 of them), this foldable head lamp armored pocket was used to prevent the tank torch durigng the battle, same idea was in Wehrmacht with early pz.kpfw III, and stug -3 up to model F with their pockets for lights with front covers.

Big lid on a crew compartment roof of T-26 tank is not a fuel fill one,  this is air vent hatch
